Wow… you sure have alotta time on your hands get a new hobby mate!

Note from admin: This comment from ‘Ed’ was posted by someone with an IP address in the same location as Surrey Lofts’ registered office and was posted before the site started showing up high in Google rankings.

The same IP address has also made repeated visits to this site – even after posting this comment – so there’s a high probability it actually could be from someone at Surrey Lofts.

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your poor experience with Surrey Lofts. I feel for you and your family, but really appreciate this review and the time and effort you have put into publishing it.
I was in the final stages of deciding on who to build our loft conversion and was about to choose surrey Lofts over my previously used, trusted builder Paul Connet. The price for surrey loft was attractive to me, but following reading your review I have now made the decision to spend a few £k more and go with Paul Connett who has done previous work well for me.
Good luck in your legal battle. I hope you can move past your poor experience quickly.

Many thanks for taking the time to write this review (not as much time as you had to spend with the builders!). We hate having builders in the house as there always seem to be problems but a constructive warning is helpful.

I am currently in a major dispute with Mark Grimshaw of Hersham/Walton on Thames/Field Common Lane.

It has been stated before in other reviews, he is a ‘smooth operator’ the ultimate salesman who convinced me he could cope and deal with my building project.

The reality is very different and after 11 months of him having men at my house and me having given him vast amounts of money, I been left with a property open to the elements and a myriad of work half finished.

Having now had the work inspected, reported on and documented it is clear the man was totally out of depth on my project and not the ‘big builder’ he has been portraying himself to be.

He has a slick Modus Operandi, and as has been stated before appears to continuously manipulate the truth and lie.

He was paid £10,000 (which is the fraction of the money he was given overall) to employ an architect, but never finalised any drawings before starting building. He was paid to employ a Structural Engineer, but despite completing some quite complex work, has failed to produce any Structural Drawings. He was paid to employ a Building Inspector who appears to of signed off work when it has not been completed correctly.

I paid money up front for work that has been completed, but now been deemed incorrect/dangerous and had to be demolished and is now being re-built by a proper builder.

Yes, I should of read all the reviews on Mr Grimshaw and his various companies that I have now seen. Yes, I should of ‘fact checked’ 100% of everything that came out of this mans mouth.

In my opinion, he is plain a clearly not a successful businessman and proficient builder.

I have only ever known him as ‘Mark from Surrey Lofts’, I did not know what Ltd company was behind Mark from Surrey Lofts – he asked me to pay some money to Surrey Developments Walton Ltd and other monies to him and his son personally.
He produced plans for me with ‘Surrey Lofts’ on the bottom and he had ‘Surrey Lofts’ vans trucks delivering materials to my house that had been taken from other building sites and his warehouse. He met with me in his ‘Surrey Lofts’ Office and his men wore ‘Surrey Lofts’ branded clothing. His sign on the fence of my house was advertising ‘Surrey Lofts’, the email address he used to send us emails from was “Mark Grimshaw mark@surreylofts.co.uk” and when external drivers delivered materials to our property, or the building inspector attended or architect met with us – everyone stated that they had been asked to attend by ‘Mark from Surrey Lofts’.

I was therefore shocked one day last month when Mark Grimshaw stated that he had sold Surrey Lofts and was now going on his own. We always believed Mark Grimshaw and Surrey Developments Ltd was trading as Surrey Lofts.

We were not aware that Surrey Lofts (Weybridge) Ltd was put into liquidation by Mr Grimshaw in 2019 and had been dissolved in 2022. We also were not aware that Mr Grimshaw had sold the assets of Surrey Lofts Group Ltd to Surrey Lofts (Walton) Ltd and he placed Surrey Lofts Group Ltd into liquidation and sold Surrey Lofts (Walton) Ltd to someone who has worked for him on and off for a number of years.

We were not aware that we had been trading with just Surrey Developments (Walton) Ltd that is apparently nothing to do with Surrey Lofts.

Mr Grimshaw appears to still be working with his son out of the same Industrial Unit he was using as Surrey Lofts and driving the same Truck the Surrey Lofts Driver used to use.

When I started to challenge Mr Grimshaw on the massive inconsistent facts, he reported me to the local police for ‘Harassment’ and I was told to back off by the police – having done absolutely nothing wrong other than paid this man and his son plenty of money for work that has not been done to my house and also, we now know, lots of work done very badly.

Clearly, a man who knows the system !

We are now pursuing him through the courts, because despite him appointing a solicitor – they have now stopped responding to the very clear and obvious damming evidence of incompetence they have been sent.

I suspect there is a lot more to come out about this man and his various companies, so if you have also had a poor experience in dealing with Mark Grimshaw and don’t wish to write a review in the public domain and don’t know who to turn to – please do send your complaints or concerns with work he has done for you to CowboyBuilderKT123@hotmail.com and I will collate the information and pass it to my solicitor to review for us all.

    Unprofessional bunch of cowboys.

They employ sketchy tradesman who fail to communicate with each other or clients resulting in timely and costly ‘fixes’.

Very little attention to detail with a poor finish (certainly not ‘decorator smooth’ ).

Carpentry work was awful needing much beading and filling. Rubbish and mess left everywhere and on extension once they decided the build was complete. 3 month job took 7 months to complete.

(Apparently the owner Mark Grimshaw decided to liquidate and resell the company to a Leigh Miller during this same time..)

Had to chase them for months for completion documents and building control sign off only to find out that the money i had paid them for building control was never paid!

Leigh then held this payment to ransom until I had given them a 5 star review on Google!! Completely unethical and fraudulent company.

A quick check on company’s house records against the chaps that run the operation show a worrying trend of liquidation every few years so as to avoid any guarantees on work taken out presumably.

    Don’t use these guys.

Be wary of 5 star Google reviews.

We had our loft done by this company in 2015 (although it was 2016 by the time we got the handover documentation).

During the process we had various small issues with them, such as request scheduled payments before required work had been completed.

It was like their office had no idea what was happening on their building sites.

Promised a team of builders but was just one person most of the time.

Tried to charge us extra which we were shown on their design drawings.

They hadn’t even done the downstairs smoke alarms properly which was picked up by building control when they came round to sign the job off.

In march we have found that there has been a failure with the roofing membrane and it was lifting in the wind. Initially SL just claimed it was storm damage, but after getting two separate roofers out to look, plus contacting Firestone, all said it was an adhesive failure, but additionally the roofers said the roof has not been done properly.

SL have since been ignoring us until recently when mark replies to just say he doesn’t work at SL anymore and company has been liquidated, yet he’s responding to his SL email, from his SL email address.

If he doesn’t work there and the company doesn’t exist, why is he still using the email?

Anyway, we have now ended up with having to completely re do the roof for probably several thousands of pounds, which I don’t know if should be done through our home insurance.

Very poor experience with Surrey Lofts as well, and in particular Mark Grimshaw.

New roof installed as part of an overall loft conversion. Ridge tiles were put in place, which failed and shunted down to hang over the lip of the roof, and by more luck than judgement were fortunate not to come crashing down on the ground (or us) below. Surrey Lofts came and removed the whole line of ridge tiles but left the roof in a poor/dangerous state (confirmed by the local planning authority). Mark said it was caused by the weather (without even sending anyone round to inspect it) but I had multiple, independent, qualified roofers round who all disagreed. After suggesting that the roof should be covered by the 10 year Surrey Lofts guarantee, I was told by Mark to stop ‘harassing’ his staff (which was laughable). The 10 year guarantee turned out to not be worth the paper it was written on, because the Surrey Lofts (Weybridge) Ltd company I had signed the contract with to do the work had ceased trading. Yet apparently Mark Grimshaw was still able to use the trading name of Surrey Lofts. Go figure. In the end I had to pay for the roof repairs out of my own pocket. My advice would be to think very, very carefully before you use any of the companies associated with Mark Grimshaw.
